The Chemical Manufacturers Association (CMA) recently urged state chemical
industrial councils (CIC) to become proactive in achieving risk based regulation.
Issues facing the chemical industry include environmental justice, toxics
use reduction, and chlorine bans. The Maryland CIC successfully beat back
two toxics use reduction bills earlier this year. A voluntary pollution
prevention program is being developed instead. Industry has enlisted the
proactive efforts of the Governor of Ohio for voluntary pollution prevention.
This Governor warns of legislation to follow if voluntary prevention fails.
May the sound science, risk based regulation ball continue to roll.
